For and against funding BBC Radio 1
For:
  • Appeals to younger listeners-presenters
  • Fits the requirements to cater for all
  • Does not appeal to an older audience so is not the same as commercial audience
  • offers a live performance
  • reflects diversity-life hacks, advice campaigns
  • live music is educating
Against:
  • its seen as not educating and informing
  • not classical
  • people think that popular music is not important

It makes the live lounge more accessible and promotes Both the BBC and Vevo. The BBC website can be hard to navigate so people might just give up so its better that thy have it on other platforms too so people that find it hard to access it in a different way can acces it.

The BBC help to protect under 18s by making sure that inappropriate language such as swearing is not used before 9 O'clock, They use pre-warnings when there is a chance that inappropriate language might be used e.g festival set by the black eyed peas, They make sure that they give a waring during News when they are discussing content like suicide&assault that might be triggering to younger users.

Broad casting on two channels means that more people can listen to it and you can get a wider audience for the band.

The live lounge is ver prestigious, if you cant sing without autotune then your basically
wrecked, the live lounge is a very intimate room probably making it a bit more
comfortable for nervous artists. The artists have to sing a cover that was recently
released that contrasts their own genre.

What is the audience appeal of the live lounge?

the live lounge appeals to the audience and  fits to the uses and gratification theory
making sure that listeners can relate to the presenters and the artists and making sure
that the presenters are of a similar age to the audience. Giving the audience
background information on the artist and their previously released songs, upcoming
events to do with the artist and so on. Giving the audience live music to enjoy and
making sure that they can share the link and re-watch and discuss the performance
afterwards.

BBC Radio 1 Remit:
The BBC Radio 1 remit is to entertain young listeners ages 15-29. The presenters have
to talk about mental health and other topics relevant to young people. They have to
feature live music and support new emerging artists.

How does the live lounge appeal to the target audience and meet the BBCs Remit?
1)What could you include?
2)Who are the audience?
3)How is the audience appealed to?
4)What is the remit?
5)How is the remit met?
6)What evidence from the show could you use to support your answer?

1) Who the audience are and what might appeal to them, What is the remit an how is it
met
2)15-19 year olds, young people
3)They talk about topics relevant to the target audience and play music that might
appeal to the target audience, young presenters,
4)The remit is to entertain young listeners ages 15-29. The presenters have
to talk about mental health and other topics relevant to young people. They have to
feature live music and support new emerging artists.
5)They appeal to young people by talking about topics that are relevant to them and by
playing music that might appeal to young people and they have the live lounge that plays
live music and in those live lounge sessions they feature newly emerging artists from
the UK.
6)

The live lounge appeals to the audience through their choice of presenters and the
artists it features. An example of A good choice of artists is when they featured Raye
who is a local newer artist thats not so well known but appeals to their younger
audience though je use of pop music. The Live Lounge fits to the BBC remit through
their young artists, presenter and through them featuring newly emerging artists
examples of that are when they featured RAYE and the fact that they chose Rickie,
Melvin and Charlie and their live lounge presenters, these presenters are pretty young,
near enough the same age as the target audience, this means that the presenters are
more likely to relate to the problems of the listeners and vise versa. The live lounge also
appeals to the audience through their choice to dual broadcast on both Radio 1 and
Radio 1 Extra, this helps broaden their range of audience and reach a larger range of
people. This ensures that the live lounge targets their audience but also reaches others
outside of their target
audience. The live lounge again meets the remit though the advice that the presenter
give and the topics that they choose to talk about on their show. An example of this is
when they have like live lounge episodes about self esteem and mental health, this
both meets the remit by including advice campaigns, has relevance to young listeners
and also helps to entertain young listeners and their target audience.

LO:To Reflect on areas to improve in the assessment

Question1:
1)Identify the word to describe a large company which owns a set of companies that
produce different media forms.- Conglomerate (Such as Warner Bros)
2)Bauer Media owns Radio stations as well as magazines. Identify the word that
describes adding other areas of business in this way.- Diversification
3)One source of funding for the BBC Radio 1- TV Licence

Question2:
1)Explain one way in which radio stations target their audiences, use Radio 1 Live
lounge as an example in your answer. They have presenters who use informal language
with their guests, this appeals to young people because the presenters are using more
everyday language which maybe the can relate to more, they feel as though the
interview is more chilled out, keeps people interested because its not so boring, makes
radio a much better/calmer environment for young people.

Target Q3: Make points about how the BBC Radio provide wider content on their radio
stations, give examples from Radio 1 and why they do this linked to the remit.

  • BBC Radio provides a wider range of content than commercial radio for several
reasons
  • Firstly, Radio 1 provides...   ( a platform for Live music)
  • This example is due to the remit and in particular...
(They need to provide a platform for live music e.g. they had Stormzy play live on the
live lounge and then had an interview afterwards)
  • We can identify this in the live lounge through...  (e.g. they had Stormzy play on
the live lounge featuring a single of his own and cover of something else but in his
own genre or style)

Skater Boi- Avril Lavigne- 2002
Genre: Combination of punk rock, pop-punk, power pop and alt pop styles.
Basically, there was a girl and a boy who liked each other but he was a scruffy skater
boy and she was a posh ballerina and he wasn't good enough for her because she was
a posh ballerina and she cared too much about what other people though about their
relationship so then the song is written in the perspective of the new girlfriend who is
boasting a little bit about the fact that she has a cool boyfriend and she lost out on that
chance. She sets up an illegal concert in the street on top of a car.
She sings on top of a car about how great the boy is, boasting a bit about the fact that
the ballerina cant have him. Sings in a crowd on the car with someone videoing her and
then the police come. She sets up an illegal concert in the street on a car.
Avril Lavigne features in the music video, a trick biking guy, a band, some stunt actors,

Teenage Dirtbag- Wheatus- 2000
Genre: Pop rock, alternative pop and pop punk
The song is set in a school, The kids bike gets crushed, he walks/runs around school
singing. They sing as a band in a gym and at the prom.
The song is about a boy who likes rock type music who likes a girl who seems kind of
popular and has a mean boyfriend. They sing in a Prom, and in the end the girl likes the
same music as him and it seems as though she likes him too but then it was a dream
and he wakes up on his stairs.
A band features in the music video as well as Brendan.B.Brown who is the lead singer,
guitarist and the only remaining member of Wheatus. it Features Jason Biggs as the
nerdy boy and Mena Suvari as the popular girl he likes.

[Verse 1]
Her name is Noelle
I have a dream about her

She rings my bell

I got gym class in half an hour
Oh, how she rocks
In Keds and tube socks

But she doesn't know who I am

And she doesn't give a damn about me

[Chorus]
'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh

[Verse 2]
Her boyfriend's a dick
And he brings a gun to school

And he'd simply kick
My ass if he knew the truth
He lives on my block
And he drives an IROC

But he doesn't know who I am
And he doesn't give a damn about me

[Chorus]
'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby
Listen to Iron Maiden, baby, with me, ooh

[Bridge]
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'

[Verse 3]
Man, I feel like mold
It's prom night and I am lonely
Lo and behold
She's walkin' over to me
This must be fake

My lip starts to shake
How does she know who I am?
And why does she give a damn about me?
I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby

Come with me Friday, don't say maybe
I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby, like you
[Outro]
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'
Oh, yeah, dirtbag
No, she doesn't know what she's missin'..

The purpose of Skater boi was mostly to Promote the singers image and to show off the singers talent to the a punk like sort of audience. It did also kind of convey the meaning of the song but it was mostly to promote the singer. This song was mostly to show off who she was as a singer after her first hit single.
The purpose of Teenage dirtbag was to convey a narrative/meaning and to show the bands talent as it was their debut single. Cross promotion- Teenage dirtbag was featured in a film called loser this helps to promote the song and the film.

Skater boi- Parallel Narrative
Teenage dirtbag-Narrative

The Skater boi music video creates a parallel Narrative that comments on the meaning of the song. Whereas Teenage dirtbag coveys the narrative in the music video.

Skater boi- Lip syncing, main focus is on the singer and sometimes the band, She performs to the cameras some of the time. The video tells a story.
Teenage dirtbag- When they do show the band, they are performing to the cameras but the main focus throughout most of the video is the film not the band, The video tells a story, the story matches the lyrics and it is filmed and edited like a movie because it is in a movie, most of the video is clips from the movie/relates to the movie. It is lip synced.

LO: To examine he use of media language in music videos

Mise en scene covers...
  • setting
  • costume
  • props
  • lighting
  • hair and makeup
  • performance (positioning, facial expressions, body language)
  • colour
In the music video, they used that costume because it shows off quite a lot of skin and makes her seem very feminine whist it is a camouflage colour which has connotations of war and military making her seem like a soldier in her breakup.

The fact that the scene they're in is decorated in gold with photos framed on the wall, shows that they are wealthy. The fact that they're all wearing clothes that seem kind of expensive and they all have gold chains and sunglasses, also make us think that they are wealthy. The fact that they are all dancing together gives us the idea that they are all friends and not enemies. The guy in the front is wearing a slightly different clothes from the rest showing his status within the group. All of these different elements show us that this is most likely to be a hip hop type genre of music.

The image of the video suggests that the artist is very wealthy because...
  • She is sat in a bathtub of money, gold jewellery and diamond jewellery
  • Her bath tap is gold
  • the floor must have been expensive because it is made out of like black marble
  • Her bathtub is like transparent or something
Skater boi-

This makes them seem like rebels because they are spray painting, illegally.

She is wearing sort of edgy clothes with her cap on backwards , she is wearing sort of
Skater clothes and she is singing as a performance so her face is not serious. She is sat
outside on this old broken chair. That looks somewhat like something a grandma would
have in their living room. She is wearing those like black studded band things around her
wrist. Her dark makeup around her eye also makes her look a bit edgy but the rest of her
makeup is mostly light not too extravagant. Set in La, skyscrapers, lots of cars, wide
roads, urban area. A satanic star is painted on the ground. They are throwing an illegal
concert. At the end they smash their guitars and the car.
They,re riding bikes and skateboards inside.

She's stood on top of a car while she's singing
They,re all running ad jumping about on these
cars

Teenage dirtbag:

His clothes dont match at all, he looks very geeky with those sunglasses, the guitar
gives us the idea that it is a calmer kind of song compared to Skater boi. His hat
contributes to the geeky kind of look he has going. It is set in a highschool gym.
Another set of gross, mismatched clothes.

Pretty funny facial expressions throughout
not a serious facial expression. The fact that he's the main focus of all of the band
members shows that hes the main singer and shows his importance within the group.
The band isn't shown much thought because it is part of a film that shows the
narrative of the song
The artist even looks geeky compared to some of the characters in the film.
The outside of the school is shown and a lot of it is set in the school corridor.
The boy in the picture above is a stereotypical american bully, he is tall and is
on the football team and he has like a group of friends sheeping along behind him

LO: To explore how camerawork is used to create meaning in music videos

1)Isolated, beauty,
2)Being on her own/ the beauty of loneliness
3)She might be singing about being on her own so maybe thats why she used an
isolated area to show loneliness. a long shot is used to show that shes all alone in this
isolated location.

Shot type, Angle, Movement

Dutch-The Dutch angle is a shot in which the camera has been rotated around the axis of the lens and relative to the horizon or vertical lines in the shot. The primary use of a Dutch angle is to cause a sense of unease or disorientation for the viewer.

Handheld-With handheld shots the camera is carried by the operator, often creating an uneven movement

Teenage dirtbag-naturalistic
Skater boi- Expressionistic
1)Already done
2)POV, shows her face/ focuses on her face
3) Extreme long shot/wide shot, making it obvious that he's on his own/ makes him seem
more isolated
4)High angle, long shot, showing that she's higher than everybody else on top of the car
makes her seem more powerful/important
5)Mid shot, low angle, looking up at them makes them seem superior/ makes you seem
small in comparison. To show that the character has kind of a group behind him
6)Extreme close up Dutch angle, focusses in on her face, goes with the genre and the
fact that its expressionistic

Adjectives- Fast, shaky, energetic,

Adjectives-slow, steady, less, cinematic, smoother,

The camera movement in Teenage dirtbag is naturalistic. For example, at one point of
the video, they use a pan movement but it is very slow, smooth and more cinematic like.
The camerawork fits the tone of the music because the music is about a loner and its not
quick, load excitable music.

LO:To explore how sound and editing are used to create meaning in music Videos
Diegetic and non diegetic

Diegetic sounds are sounds that come from the film, the characters can hear it
Non diegetic sounds are sounds that are added in for the audience (us) to hear but not
the characters e.g. character theme tunes.
Skater-Boi diegetic- Spray cans at the start and helicopter at the end. They included
them because the spray cans make her seem more rebelious and the so does the police
helicopter at the end. These make the video seem more realistic
Teenage dirtbag diegetic- The car hitting the bike, this is used mostly for dramatic effect
adds realism

Editing:

Order of shots/shot choices
Continuity
shot duration
Pace and rhythm
special effects

Skater-boi has a faster pace and more cuts, because it cuts to the beat if the music and
the music is fast paced and supposed to be exciting. Both songs cut to the beat to give it
more of a dramatic effect. Teenage dirtbag has longer shot length which links to the fact
that the music video is story like. In teenage dirtbag, they use transitions like fade etc.
They use special effects like slow motion which focus on the girl and put her as the
spotlight showing that she is his object of desire.

One way in which music videos use media language to differ from each other

Skaterboi is more fast pace and uses more shots this links to the punk rock type genre.
It uses more mid shots and close ups and focuses on Avril Lavigne a lot as it is a
performance video. On the other hand, Teenage dirtbag uses less, longer shots and
uses mostly long shots, it also doesn't focus on the lead singer it focuses on the boy
from the film. Skaterboi uses costume and makeup to show the singers identity whereas
teenage dirtbag uses costume to show the narrative of the story. Skaterboi uses a lot of
different camera angles to focus on Avril Lavigne whereas Teenage dirtbag doesn't use
so many because they are trying to follow the characters of the movie and the narrative.

LO: To explore how representations are constructed in music videos

males are stereotypically supposed to be sporty, active and strong, only supposed to
show anger not other emotions
Females are stereotypically supposed to be happy but physically weak and fragile but
also caring and kind. Supposed to be quiet and submissive. Obedient.

objectification- Degrading someone to the status of an object
sexual objectification- When a male/female views another male/female primarily as an
object of sexual desire rather than a person.

Active, shows a messy teenage bedroom, casual clothes, not objectified, bold and punky
=different not typical. Stereotypes- Ballerina&rockstar
Representing teenagers as being rebellious,
Urban sports that appeal to young teenagers

Avril Lavigne- Rebellious and different counter-stereotype musically skilful, popular,
successful, Anti-establishment
Punk rock genre- Anti-Establishment, partying
Teenagers- Rebellious, naughty, disrespectful stereotypical way Vandalism and crime
Urban setting- Not looked after, city, busy, not glamorous, poorer area, realistic
Gender-Girl is represented stereotypically as a ballerina and the boy is a rockstar the
males are represented more stereotypically Avril Lavigne is not represented as a
stereotypical girl
Ethnicity-Not very diverse, predominantly white. Punk-Rock genre is predominantly
white, other ethnicities are underrepresented
Sexuality- Heterosexual relationships heteronormative,

men looking drunk
he is not stereotypical he folds in front of the girl, doesn't stand up for himself

The band-Casual,chill,
The male & Female protagonists- the male is presented as not stereotypical and geeky
and the female is presented as stereotypical, popular, pretty etc.
Ethnicity- Again predominantly white almost excluding other ethnicities
High school- Unfair, Busy, sociable, stereotypical,
Teenage stereotypes, football team, energetic, sporty, rude to each other,
Gender- There was mainly males and the males were all quite tall and they were all
disrespecting and being rude to the loser boy and there were boys that were shown to
be on the football team, the girls all looked pretty, wearing dresses, makeup etc.
Sexuality- Again Heterosexual relationships and heterosexual romance etc.

LO: To explore and practice exam style questions

Compare how gender representations are constructed in music videos.Refer to
two music videos you have studied to support your answer.   [4]

Woman are represented differently in Wheatus Teenage dirtbag and Avril Lavigne's
Skaterboi. In Teenage dirtbag, women are represented stereotypically, for example,
the two boys are fighting for the girls love in a way, she is seen as attractive and sweet,
the actress is dressed in nice sort of girly clothes and she acts flirty with the boys,
this makes women seem more like an object, trophy or prize. This is in contrast to the
way that Avril Lavigne is represented as a woman, she is represented in a rebellious
way, she is wearing kind of punk, skater clothes and she sets up an illegal concert. As
well as this, the main singer is a woman and she is sen the most on camera, she hangs
around the boys and is treated like an equal, this contrasts the way that women are
represented like an object in Teenage dirtbag.

Explain how stereotypes are used in music videos. Refer to two music videos you
have studied to support your answer.    [10]

Stereotypes are often used in music videos because they are easy to recognise and
help the audience to identify characters and their role within the video. In Skater Boi by
Avril Lavigne, they use the teenage rebel stereotype, in the music video, we see
teenagers committing illegal acts and doing things that are just generally rebellious.
This includes things such as, graffitiing walls, abseiling down buildings and setting up
illegal street concerts. This shows a lack of respect for the rules and fits the rebel
stereotype associated with teenagers. Also in Skater Boi, they show all of the
teenager wearing darker colour clothes, this makes them seem mire intimidating and
makes teenagers in general seem antisocial and sad, this follows a common stereotype.
In Teenage Dirtbag, they use gender stereotypes. The females are objectified
and seen as a trophy or something to be won. They are shown to be flirty and sweet, this
is stereotypical for a teenage girl, focused on love life etc. Male stereotypes are used
when they show the jock boyfriend, he is wearing a letterman jacket which shows that he
is on the football team and he has a physically big build and a group of friends following
him, this is stereotypical for a popular teenage boy. As well as using gender stereotypes,
they use stereotypes to show how people lower in the social hierarchy are represented.
They show this by making the loser character wear clothes that make him stand out from
the rest and he is always seen on his own whereas people are normally seen in a group
of friends.

Media Lego movie promotional methods

Film posters

That massive lego advert- Lego took over an entire stretch of adverts on ITV, they made many adverts made up of lego including the British heart foundation, BT ect. This created hype for lego and then they played the lego movie advert afterwards, they also had a character featured in between every advert.

Trailers-Gave the audience an insight into what the film would be like, in adverts ect. On tv so many people can see.

tweets ect

Interviews with the cast

reviews

Social media

Teasers

Meet cables

Sponsorship deals

Lego world sets- Promotion to young kids, theywould want their parents to buy them the sets and then want them to take them to watch the movie.

The lego movie video game- Kids would play the video game and therefore be more interested in the film and the characters that are in the game. This appeals to older kids and teenagers who are more likely to be playing video games, before the video game, these older kids may not have been interested in the film.

Collectable mini figures

Key chains

School supplies

stickers and activities

Lego cards with Sainsburies

McDonalds happy meals- Almost every kid has had a Mc Donalds happy meal in their life and having toys linked to the film inside of a happy meal promote the movie to both the kids eating the meal and the parents buying it. This appeals to younger kids, the kids will want to see the movie, they will ask their parents about it.

Theme parks

premier for it- The cast and many other big celebrities got to watch the film before it was released, thos created hype over the film and meant that they had celebrities tweeting about their film ect. This appeals to an older audience/ parents/ adults.

branded clothing-

Every week in 2014 they released a new character poster- Introducing their character to the audience before the film is released, this means that the audience is already interested and invested in the character and will want to see the movie.

The lego stores around the country had events

Free accessory packs in store after events

Website that allowed fans to make lego versions of themselves- They might feel move involved in the movie, therefore more likely to want to see it.

Q5:

LO:To explore the exam style question for music magazine and music video.

Media language: Text, images, cover lines, colour palette, composition,

Mid shot of one young, female artist, wearing revealing clothes, gloves, gold hair accessories, connotations of wealth and power, value ect. connotations of royalty, pop royalty/ goddess,

colour palette-gold/brown, black, yellow, white, saturated, bright, warm colours, happy, positive, ordered layout, formal, expertise,

type, large sans-serif, shows modern, clean lines, lower case, relaxed, rule breaking. no capital for the name billboard.

multiple people in the main image. 11 Images on the cover, old male artists.

Suits, non sexualised, fully covered, formal, powerful, but also fun because their clothes are multicoloured, unconventional. Looking up shows power and importance.

saturated, bright, multicolour, psychedelic theme, fun and exciting.

Cluttered, 11 cover lines, exciting, full of information. Capitals, block capitals, sans-serif script, loud colours.

Media is used differently in the two magazines, by using different colour palettes, while both magazines use saturated colour palettes, the first magazine uses a gold, black and yellow theme to promote an idea of calm, royalty, wealth ect. while the second magazine uses brighter colours/a multi-coloured theme to promote the idea of excitement and fun, promotes the idea that a lot is going on inside of the magazine. It also has connotations of the psychedelic theme that was around when the band were popular. In the first magazine, they only use one image, this strengthens the idea of calm,it shows a slower pace, there isn't too much going on,while the second magazine features multiple people in the main image and 11images in total. This again, gives us the idea that the magazine is action packed and filled to the brim with new, exciting topics. Another piece of media language that further strengthens this idea,is the layout of the cover lines, the first magazine, features a clean, orderly layout, which suggests a sense of formality in the magazine, whereas, the second magazine features a scattered, cluttered, messy layout, which strengthens the idea that the magazine is fun loving, filled and exciting. In the first magazine, they feature a young, female artist, by herself, she is wearing very little, very revealing clothes, this sexualises her, but it links into the colour palette of gold and black as this promotes the idea that she is very powerful and holds a lot of value, this makes her seem like a goddess. In conclusion, media language is used differently to show that the billboard magazine is calm and chill whereas the mojo magazine is filled with life and excitement.
